San Jose, CA - Entic.net announces the first ever Solaris based Cloud Servers, running on top of OpenIndiana. Customers have the choice of deploying the Cloud Servers in our San Jose Internap Data Center or our brand new UK/Europe Data Center.

Effective Oct 1st, 2010, you can get our popular Solaris servers based on OpenIndiana in the UK as well as in our US data center. We selected OpenIndiana over Nexenta Core Platform for these reasons:
1. There is a (perhaps, perceived) lag in packages, Nexenta is currently syncing packages from Debian -> Ubuntu -> Nexenta. We wanted to avoid this lag.
2. Since OpenIndiana is more aligned with Oracle Solaris, it may be easier to migrate between the two. Solaris customers can deploy their applications on our Cloud, and our customers can select Oracle Solaris based deployments with little possible change.
3. Our customers generally tend to be people who are familiar with Solaris and love Solaris for what it is. OpenIndiana is more Solaris like than Nexenta is. We feel if you really want a Linux like environment, like Ubuntu, you should use Ubuntu or Nexenta. We felt the need to differentiate from Linux, and OpenIndiana provides us this.
4. Nexenta.com, the sponsor of NCP, also has a different focus. Storage, not an general purpose server OS. We felt that some technologies may be left out of NCP OS, if we had chosen to deploy that.
5. We feel there is a lot more excitement with OpenIndiana and a lot more community involvement than there is with Nexenta Core Platform.
Of course, some of these are speculations and may not become fact in the future. But this is a strategic decision, and we hope you like the new Cloud environments. Thanks!

Are the IPS repositories for OpenIndiana being maintained yet? The website looks a bit sparse and parts are broken.
I think last time I checked blastwave and sunfreeware turned off their OpenSolaris repos as well as Oracle obviously.
It's a shame. Too bad Oracle killed it and put Solaris out of reach of a lot of people by charging $1k per socket.
